" I'd just love to discover one born-again intelligent Christian who could go through, paragraph by paragraph, two books - Christopher Hitchens's "God is Not Great" and Sam Harris's "The End of Faith""

I have found Atheism/Materialism to be shallow & depressing. Never really answers the question Why. Why should I (well) Do Anything (What's it all About Alfie? Is That All there Is? To cite two modern popular songs.).
In addition Atheism/Materialism no longer Works. Its (pick a yea) 1875. Based on what was Known though science a fairly good argument could be made for the Atheist/Materialist world view. THE problem is as we have learned though science those arguments have gotten weaker and weaker.
"I find it quite improbable that such order came out of chaos. There has to be some organizing principle. God to me is a mystery, but is the explanation for the miracle of existence, why there is something instead of nothing."

"As we survey all the evidence, the thought insistently arises that some supernatural agency-or, rather, Agency-must be involved. Is it possible that suddenly, without intending to, we have stumbled upon scientific proof of the existence of a Supreme Being? Was it God who stepped in and so providentially crafted the cosmos for our benefit?"

IMO (as always I..Could..Be..Wong) 2 reasons people become an Atheist. 1. Bad experience with religion o someone religious, 2. I don't Want There To Be A God.
An unsatisfying answer, due to its basis in a false idea of reality/existence: Metaphysical Dualism (see my comment above).
Consequently, belief in "The Fall" has engendered unnecessary self-hatred and unearned guilt in billions of people for many centuries to this day.
I take what Cicero said wrote about Cyrenaic Epicureanism and apply it more accurately to all religion and their fideisms:
"Res total ficta pueriliter est."
"The whole thing is a childish fiction."
and a profoundly destructive one at that.
