Peter Boghossian engaged five Puerto Rican men in San Juan with the claim, “Racism is an issue in Puerto Rico.”
The participants expressed a range of views on racial stereotypes, gentrification, and colonialism, though none claimed to experience racism first-hand. Two college-age participants say the younger generation “doesn’t see race” while another participant says curly hair and traditional African music are “looked down on.” The group explored classism and its overlap with skin color, particularly regarding the privatization of Puerto Rico’s public land by wealthy immigrants.
