Two friends in San Juan, Puerto Rico landed on opposite ends of the spectrum in this conversation about the limits of self-identification. When Peter Boghossian presents the claim, "Miss Universe should be open to trans-women,” the two agree that people can identify as whatever gender they choose, but disagreement arises about limits on gender guidelines for women’s competition.
One participant says that men can learn to be women. She expresses a different view when Peter asks if a person can identify as another race, saying “you are what you are” regarding racial identity.
The other participant emphasizes the difference between trans women and “natural-born women.” For both race and gender, she says people “see what they see” and should not be asked to confirm the self-identity of others.
Homo Sapiens are a dimorphic species of mammal. We reproduce by combining small and large gametes. Males have sperm, females have ovum. Homo Sapiens cannot change sex.
This madness needs to stop now.
There are men, women and the confused. Those of us who are men or women should tolerate and accept the confused but not be forced to embrace their confusion.
