Woke in Plain English: "Inclusion"
Inclusion. What the woke mean by inclusion is “restricting speech.” Here’s how it works. An inclusive space is a welcoming space. And who wouldn’t want to create a welcoming space? But to make people feel welcome, you have to make sure they are not offended, because if they’re offended, they will no longer feel welcome. The best way to make sure people aren’t offended is to exclude certain ideas. In order to exclude certain ideas, you have to make sure people don’t say certain things, things that could make people feel unwelcome. So, an "inclusive space" means “an environment that restricts speech.
Using the word "inclusion" to justify restricting speech is conspicuously Orwellian. The traditional understanding of what "inclusion" means is literally the opposite of how it's used in Social Justice ideology. In this ideology, “inclusion” does not mean to welcome all people regardless of their physical characteristics; rather, it means to exclude people who voice certain opinions.
I recently had an interesting conversation with Indian-American author and professor Rajiv Malhotra. In our conversation, I learned that the postmodern perversion of language is not unique to the US; it also rampant in India. He refers to this as a type of colonialism: ideas from US universities are colonizing India. This is ironic because postmodern neo-colonialism is spearheaded by the very people who denounce colonialism. Similarly, vocal critics of colonialism cannot make sense of the fact that denizens of Hong Kong were waving British flags in protest of mainland China's incursion into their democratic freedoms and ways of life—as Melissa Chen has eloquently articulated. I'll be releasing an entire series of videos about colonialism in the months ahead.
Here's a clip from my conversation with Rajiv, and you can watch the full conversation here.
