Perhaps the dumbest of all the anti-woke stances....

Besides the genocide, forcible relocation, and the extinguishing of cultures, colonialism was great!

Those are allegations that are based upon the faulty notion that the existing tribal and often brutal conditions of native peoples was a preferable life to the more law based, organized social governance that emerged from Western Europe. The native Americans of North America were quick to adopt the advances and benefits the Europeans brought such as the use of horses, agriculture and a broad assortment of technological advancements they were cutoff from for over a couple millennia due to the environmental changes that erased the accessibility that brought them there.

The overly romanticized descriptions and “stories” of these completely benevolent, environmentalist and fair societies is as realistic as viewing the recent and violent summer of love as a mostly peaceful protest. Not to say though that there weren’t foolish and horrible acts committed against the native ppls. It has been a great loss to mankind that the knowledge, language and oral traditions of these groups were too often lost to obscurity. I’m not sure but I think the only native language ever written was the Cherokee. Additionally there are treaties that were broken by both the European settlers and then the newly established US government. I think some of those problems still warrant better/new resolution.

Even though I have long admired the wisdom and success of the native tribes, I have not spent the time to get a better overall understanding of the historical roots, customs or social organizations of them that I still hope to research.

Excellent comment! Written Cherokee was actually created and inspired by their encounters with the English written language. However the Maya, Aztec, and Inca peoples did have their own forms of written language although similar to hieroglyphics. I believe the Mayan language was particularly complex.

The lack of written language was the reason the native Americans were recruited to speak over radio transmissions during WWII as our enemies couldn’t decipher them. I think it was more western tribes like the Apache nation. It was pivotal in strategizing.

That was the Navajo "Code Talkers". The Japanese struggled to understand Navajo and still couldn't crack it after years of trying. Fascinating stuff.
