Furedi's book Where Have All The Intellectuals Gone is a great one, still relevant today if a tiny bit dry (though not too much) in style. Very much look forward to the crossing of minds here.
I always enjoy listening to your substacks but, you almost lost me when you glossed over the Palestine/Israel conflict and joked about Queers for Hamas. It sounded very much like something out of a Douglas Murray script.
In terms of understanding Anti-American and Anti-West sentiment, it might be helpful to pick up a non-Israeli history book. Two authors l would strongly recommend are Iian Pappe of Exeter University and Avi Sclaim former Professor at Oxford. l just saw a podcast by Chris Hedges with Avi about starting like as an Arab-Jew.
If you are worried about the degradation of US democracy, have a look at which politicians accept AIPAC donations. Ask yourself why those idiots in Washington gave 58 standing ovations to Netanyahus lies but, still promised 20B in weaponry for Israels genocide. Also why 12 states have deemed the BDS movement as being anti-semetic and anti-semitism as hate speech but, lslamaphobia is perfectly acceptable in th west.
There's a lot to comment on here. The Israel/Palestine conflict is far outside my wheelhouse, so I don't discuss it. That said, I've not only seen on video but actually met IRL people advocating for Queers for Hamas. My strong suspicion is that the individuals who are advocating for this do not understand what they're saying.
