The reason for protecting Taiwan is because if we don't then why should any other nation we've made similar promises to believe us/trust us? Ignoring such a promise is a good way to start down the path of a nation in decline globally and as the overly indebt nation we are we can't afford to allow our global dominance to fail.
The semiconductors are the ONLY reason the US keeps it promise of protection. That said, the people of Taiwan absolutely DESERVE to be left to their own devices, free of Chinese authoritarianism. The CCP is the second most dangerous group globally after the Wealthy Elite that run the Davos crowd.
This is a really beautiful discussion. I love the moral clarity of the people you're working with. They might disagree on various issues but it seems clear that they've thought through the issues and have a perspective. Great to see in young people.
All lives must be of equal value lest we give rise to justification for why some are above/beneath others which leads to things like genocide. The question shouldn't be
"Does the life of a rapist hold equal weight to one who contributes positively to society?"
but
" Does the future of a rapist hold equal weight to one who contributes positively to society?"
Even then we'd need to define exactly what is meant by "positively". If one simply adds more to the tax base in their lifetime then they take out or does it require them to make some meaningful impact on society beyond that?
With the world on the verge of a depopulation crisis b/c we let corrupt politicians and so called experts convince us for decades that the world is over populated, now is not the time to find justifications for the further cheapening of life. If anything we need to find ways to reduce deaths all around so we can survive what's coming. If modern societies fall to far we won't have the people needed to keep things repaired/working and educating the next generation on how to do the same. Let the world we created go unkept long enough and things won't just stop working they will break and break part of teh world with them.

That's one reason. The semiconductors are another. Democracy is yet another. Preserving freedom is yet another.

Fabulous. I really love this way of having a conversation. We should be doing it at home. Somebody make a boardgame please
We've thought about that.
